Having joined the orchestra as Leader in 2003, Julia is retiring from the post after nearly 20 years. She has thoroughly enjoyed the journey from what was then a String Orchestra, the Cambridge String Orchestra, to what we know today as the CCSO, a full Symphony Orchestra. After finishing her studies at the Royal Academy of Music Julia entered the profession as a free lance violinist playing with the London Symphony Orchestra, the City of London Sinfoninia, under Richard Hickox, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Rambert Dance Company as part of their smaller ensemble. Julia has always enjoyed performing solo recitals and concertos and playing chamber music. She is currently a member of the Pegari Ensemble which regularly performs in the Cambridge and Hertfordshire areas.
As well as a classical career Julia formed a jazz trio with the pianist and bass player from the rhythm section of The Fairer Sax which performed around the world from Central and South America to Bahrain! Julia has always had a love of teaching and has just retired from the post of Head of Strings at The Perse Upper School, a post she has held since 1999.
Whilst teaching for the Hertfordshire Music Service Julia was a member of the educational string quartet which performed in schools on a weekly basis to bring classical music to as many children as possible. As a teacher on the government pilot scheme for all year 3 pupils to learn an instrument she was pleased to be part of keeping music alive for the next generation.
Looking to the future, whilst the violin and music will always be Julia’s first love, attending more concerts is definitely on the agenda as well as re-designing her new garden and possibly taking on an allotment! Julia is also happy to say that she has joined The Friends of the CCSO and looks forward to watching the orchestra grow from strength to strength. Julie would like to thank everyone for your wonderful friendship and support over the years.
We wish Julia all the best and look forward to seeing her in the audience at future concerts!
